We feature Shabd Simon-Alexander’s gorgeous hand-dyed scarves in the July/August issue of Living. Her beautiful creations generated such a buzz around the office that we had to find out more about the artist, her process, and her inspiration. Lucky for us, she has a new book out, Tie-Dye: Dye It, Wear It, Share It, full of how-to projects for the new and experienced crafter, information about different dyeing techniques, and insight into the incredibly rich history of dyeing. We caught up with the artist below:

Can you tell us a little about your background—how did get into hand-dyeing?

I come from a fine-arts background (photography, sculpture, and textiles), and my introduction to dyeing was by chance. . . . I went to a party in the community garden next to my East Village apartment, and they had a picnic table laid out with stuff for tie-dyeing. I started and I just didn’t want to stop! It wasn’t even the look of tie-dye that I liked; it was more about making it—it’s so much fun and so rewarding. So I spent a year playing around and developing new techniques to create dye patterns that were more grown-up and modern, beyond what I had seen before.

Photograph by Shabd Simon-Alexander

Are people surprised to see what you call “tie-dye”?

People often have an image in their head of what they think tie-dye is, but in reality it’s just a method/artistic medium open to personal interpretation, like painting, sewing, singing; it is the individual artistic and design choices that make it what it is. The technique has been around for over 2,000 years and is known all over the world by different names: shibori in Japan, bandhani or leheria in India, plangi or tritik in Indonesia, adire in Nigeria, amarra in Peru, zha ran in China. Most of these terms translate literally to something close to “tie and dye.” I understand people’s misconceptions—I myself wasn’t attracted to most of the stuff we traditionally think of as “tie-dye”—but I love the process of making it. It is really joyful, and so I set out to create fabrics that I love with this timeless technique, and that’s how I developed my fashion label. I also love teaching tie-dye and hand-dyeing in workshops; one of the best parts is that while using the same exact technique, 10 people will get 10 completely different results based on their own tastes. You can see in my book that there is really a broad spectrum of design possibilities using tie-dye as the starting point.

Photograph by Shabd Simon-Alexander

Do you have a favorite technique? Material to work with?
It really depends on what I’m going for, but some of my favorite techniques are the scrunch-dyeing, which gives really stunning results for how easy it is, and the shibori/itajime fold-and-clamp technique, which has a great geometric nature that pairs so well with the organic quality of tie-dye. Itajime is always one of the favorite techniques among my students as well, so I now teach a class focused just on that technique. I love working with silk—the colors sometimes come out as a surprise, since I use dyes made for cotton—but the quality is so rich and stunning that it’s worth it (anyway, I love surprises!).

Photograph by Shabd Simon-Alexander

What would you say makes your tie-dyed pieces special or different?

I have developed special dyeing methods over the past few years, rooted in an historical tradition but never bound to the past. I bring inspiration into my work from all over: modern art, architectural structures, and natural elements, to name a few. In hand-dyeing, and especially in working with silks, results are often unexpected, and many of my favorite designs were the result of happy accidents. I love the combination of design, chance, and chaos in hand-dyeing. For each collection I will make up to 200 test swatches in order to choose five final fabrics. The process is the perfect combination of scientific experimentation and artistic improvisation. The first results are usually beautiful, and really would be wonderful and wearable by anyone’s standards, but the following tests and tweaks are what push the designs over the top.

Photograph by Shabd Simon-Alexander

What’s your making process? Can you tell us a little about the tools, materials, types of dye that you work with?

It’s super-easy to get set up—it’s all readily available tools, like measuring cups and spoons, a whisk, funnels, squeeze bottles, buckets, rubber bands; you can buy them all at a dollar store or use old tools you don’t need anymore. It doesn’t take a lot of space or time either, so you can set up right in your house or backyard, as long as you lay down a plastic drop cloth to catch any spills.

What’s the hardest thing to “get right” with your work?

The hardest part is keeping results fairly consistent for production. There are so many variables to consider, and even dying the same fabric in different weather makes a difference. From my experience, I can typically keep results fairly consistent, and anyway, the great part about hand-dyed pieces are that every single piece is unique!

Photograph by Paul Mpagi Sepuya

How is your studio set up? Any work rituals you follow—music playing, work on certain days, work at certain times…?

I work pretty regular days, but if I’m on a dyeing kick I may work into the night (it helps that my apartment is next door to my studio). There’s always music playing; I usually make a mix tape of the music we’re listening to while working on a collection and send it out with orders. It’s nice to revisit these mixes later on—brings me right back. I also like to cook lunch for everyone in the studio when I have the time, especially when CSA season starts and I’m getting tons of fresh beautiful veggies straight from the farm.

Tell us about your book? What’s the scope?
This is really going to be the first contemporary book all about tie-dye and hand-dyeing, and covers everything about it, from the rich history to the technical and practical. It covers a wide spectrum of tie-dye and hand-dyeing techniques, including shibori, ombré, and hand-painting, as well as a variety of traditional and cutting-edge tying techniques. It includes 22 step-by-step projects in the innovative styles that make my own collection so popular. They include women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing, and home décor and accessories. It’s also packed with my design secrets, color guidance, and expert tips on making each piece your own.

What inspired you to write it?

Ever since I started my line, one of the things people responded to the most was the fact that I was creating these fabrics by hand, and the idea that they could possibly do it themselves. I began teaching workshops from time to time, and they were always packed and students were responsive and excited. I even have students who have driven or flown in to NYC from all over the country to take my weekend intensive classes! I’ve been getting emails from people all over the world asking if I would be teaching near where they live (the answer was usually no, unfortunately), if I knew any books they could read (there weren’t any great ones out there), if I could share information (so I’m doing that, with the book!).

Photograph by Shabd Simon-Alexander

For those of us new to hand-dyeing, where should we start (an easier technique or material)? Can your book help us out?

Tie-dye is really easy to jump into, and virtually impossible to do wrong. That said, there is so much you can learn to better your craft, and make it your own style. There’s a lot of information in the book that will help you become a more advanced dyer, but you can also skip all of that and go straight to the projects section and still get great results. In the book, I include projects ranging from beginner to advanced, as well as a handful of projects that are quick and easy–some of these are the most stunning in the book, you would never imagine how simple they are to make! It’s also important to see the book as inspirational–although the instructions are provided to create the exact pieces I show in the book, it’s also meant to be a jumping off point. People should feel free to use the same techniques on a different garment, change up the fabrics, or choose their own colors. Beyond that, the possibilities are endless!

Reprinted from Tie-Dye: Dye It, Wear It, Share It, copyright (c) 2013 by Shabd Simon-Alexander.
What would you say is the most difficult of the techniques and why?

It’s actually surprising which techniques are simple and which are difficult. Some of the simplest techniques result in the most stunning results. And some things that look really simple to do, like a gradient ombré, actually take a lot of practice and patience to get right. Working with a single color can often be a good starting point; it’s hard to go wrong, and it usually looks really elegant. As you add colors, it’s important to think about how they will interact with each other, and this is where I usually end up doing many tests for a collection. Although for a personal project, I find it’s really hard to go wrong; I’ve rarely made something I wasn’t happy with, and on that rare occasion you can always just dye over it again!

Photograph by Shabd Simon-Alexander

We know you’ve done some fantastic collaborations with companies and organizations; can you tell us a little bit about these collaborations?

I’ve had a lot of fun collaborating. Some were projects with other independent designers like Mociun and Baggu; sometimes it’s a special color way or design for a larger brand like Free People. I made a tote bag for the Whitney Museum last year. I also collaborate with artists, like the costumes and props I did for the performance artist Georgia Sagri for her piece at last year’s Whitney Biennial. My technique really lends itself to personalization, and I love doing these custom projects. I hope to do more in the future.

What do you find fulfilling about making/creating?

I’ve always loved getting my hands dirty and love to make all sorts of things. I think it’s easy to imagine that everything made in factories is made by machines, but most things are still put together and created by people these days, from sneakers to cars. I also love the historical connection you feel when crafting, imagining people throughout the ages doing the same thing. And the best part is taking that technique and bringing it into your own time, infusing it with your own aesthetic and artistic ideas.

Photograph by Shabd Simon-Alexander

What inspires you?

I get inspired by everything—texture and color, strange objects, food and plants, architecture, modern art. I love leaving the city for inspiration, going to the countryside or the beach, traveling to new places, old textiles and folk costumes and crafts. I love anthropology museums, craft museums, and modern-art museums.

Any materials or color combinations that you’re really into this summer?

Bright but soft sunshiny colors. My summer collection is all sunshine yellow, sky-blue clouds, kaleidoscopic rainbows, and the stark contrast of black and white.

Photograph by Paul Mpagi Sepuya

What’s on the horizon for you?

I’m just coming out of my book hibernation, so I’m stretching and figuring it out. I’m continuing to create limited-edition collections that I’m selling exclusively online, but I’m open to collaborations with other brands or custom capsule collections as well. I also really enjoy teaching the workshops, and would love to continue traveling to new places to teach them—recent workshops brought me to L.A., Berlin, and the Catskills. But I’m not rushing into anything. I’ll see what comes my way, and in the meantime I’m working on some personal projects in the studio and loving every minute of it.

Where can we find your beautiful pieces?

I have a special collection out right now that’s available exclusively on my website—some of my classic styles in new colors, made especially to celebrate the launch of the book. It includes a couple of higher-end silk and linen pieces, some unisex jersey pieces, a silk scarf, and an infant romper.

Cupcakes are old news. The newest sugary sensation to sweep our fair city is the Cronut—the croissant-doughnut hybrid created by Dominque Ansel at his SoHo bakery last month, in which flaky, butter-impregnated laminated dough is cut into a doughnut shape, deep-fried, rolled in sugar, filled, then glazed.

With a limited production of 300 a day and a limit of two per customer, Cronut mania has driven people to line up hours before the bakery opens, and a search of Craigslist reveals a seedy underworld of Cronut scalpers selling the the five-dollar confections at a markup of 500 percent or more.

As executive food director Lucinda Scala Quinn says, “It just shows, if you’re clever you can cook up the next cupcake.”

No time to wait in line? Whip up one of these other delectable dessert hybrids at home instead.

This week, Living’s executive editor (and resident travel expert), Yolanda Edwards, hosted Maine Week on her blog, Travels With Clara. We are dying to visit all of Yolanda’s favorite spots—check out her other posts here, and head over to her blog to see more photos. For her final post, Yolanda gives us a tour of Hidden Pond. . . .

Hidden Pond is one of those all-too-rare properties that gets five stars for being perfect for families. First of all, you get your own cottage, with lots of space around it—with plenty of trees and plantings grown in, so it feels private. I think they’re also spaced out enough that your kid could be having a meltdown, or you could be having an argument, and nobody would hear you. Which is good, since the other families staying at the property will become your friends pretty quickly. Although we arrived at about 8:30 p.m. for check-in, we let Clara go for a late swim. Within 60 seconds, she had befriended Catherine, a girl the same age, and we were talking a mile a minute with her parents (we are still friends and visited them in Virginia over spring break). In the distance, there was a bonfire, with s’mores being cooked up by other families.

Back in the cottage, which was a lovely two-bedroom, the beds were perfect—great mattresses, great bedding. A screened-in porch perfect for hearing the sounds of a summer night. A full kitchen, so you can make your own coffee in the morning, or help yourself to wine whenever you like. We didn’t cook in it, but it was nice to know we could if we wanted to. Every morning, a light breakfast is delivered to the front porch—along with the newspaper. There’s usually some fruit, yogurt, and a pastry/muffin.

Now back to the macro reasons of why you would love this place: Technically, the property is in Kennebunkport (about which all I knew was that the Bush family has a home there), but actually, it’s on a quiet rural road, a 10-minute drive from “civilization.” You feel like you have options if you leave—plenty of them, from exploring just in Kennebunkport town (just to park in the Honor System parking lot and to go to Daytrip Society, both adult and kid stores, and Anniebells—or to dinner at The Ramp), or to the Goose Rocks beach, which Hidden Pond is affiliated with, so you can have lunch on the beach and just sign it to your room. Or you could drive up to Portland and have lunch at Eventide, or dinner at Fore Street, and do some shopping in between (if it’s a rainy day!). But you’ll probably just want to sit tight, hang by the pool, and relax.

There’s also the Tree Spa, the fantastic spa onsite—where you can have a treatment in a treetop room, with products from Farmaesthetics (from Rhode Island). (I had an amazing therapist and treatment!) There are bikes for all sizes that you can use during your stay. And definitely have dinner at Earth, a special restaurant—it is definitely not casual dining, so you might want to spring for a sitter if you go.

It’s definitely one of my favorite properties I’ve ever been to (Clara still talks about it and is dying to go back) and it’s just amazing that they could successfully create a proper five-star property/experience that you’d be happy to go to no matter where it is. But it’s in Maine, so you get all the pluses of getting to explore the Pine Tree State at the same time.

Summer has finally arrived, and we have vacation on the brain. This week, Living‘s executive editor (and resident travel expert), Yolanda Edwards, is hosting Maine Week on her blog, Travels With Clara. Check back here every day for Yolanda’s guide to the must-see local spots across the state, and head over to her blog for even more photos.

Last summer we spent a couple of days on Chebeague Island, staying at the super-charming Chebeague Island Inn. It’s an island that, on the surface, seems as if you could figure it out in a couple of hours, on a bike. On the first day, we actually wondered why we had committed to spending two whole days there, when there was, in my husband’s words, even, “nothing to do.” But somehow, like the Magic Mountain, Chebeague spoke to us, and by day two, we were committing to renting a house there later in the summer for a whole week. Yes, it’s an island in Maine, which means that you have to have a huge tolerance to cold to go swimming. But there is a town pool. No, there aren’t loads of restaurants to check out. But that means that you get to know the people in town, because there are so few places to be. If you rent a house, you can call for lobster delivery, or clams . . . and it’s cheap. Or you can get a permit and go clamming yourself. It’s sleepy, it’s slow, it’s magical.

On the boat (water taxi) that we took from Portland to Chebeague. It’s a 20-minute water taxi and a much longer (and cheaper) ferry.

Finding a gift for Father’s Day can be a tricky task. This year, skip the predictable department-store gifts and give Dad a thoughtful gift made by an American maker.

Key fob, $28, Rogue Territory

Born from the idea of exploration, Rogue Denim has evolved into a movement to keep the artisan trade of denim work alive. We’re also fans of their other goods, like this vegetable-oil-tanned, hand-tacked key fob.

The Runwell bike, $2,950, Shinola

Using only the highest-quality products available, the Runwell bike is made and designed in Detroit. Each bike is entirely put together by hand.

This week, Living’s executive editor (and resident travel expert), Yolanda Edwards, is hosting Maine Week on her blog, Travels With Clara. Check back here every day for Yolanda’s guide to the must-see local spots across the state, and head over to her blog for even more photos.

I’d read about the Migis Lodge on Sebago Lake for years, and when we finally got a chance to go at the end of last summer, I was over the moon. It’s kind of like the best summer camp you can imagine—all sorts of activities, like paddleboarding, waterskiing, canoeing, tennis, shuffleboard . . . and then there’s the gorgeous lake and lots of docks to jump off of and swim to . . . and a sauna at the end of the swim.

It’s family-owned and it feels like it from the second you walk in. There’s nothing corporate about it—everyone who works there is in a good mood, and has real conversations with you that aren’t scripted, which might not seem surprising, given that it’s in Maine, and it’s not anything like a resort. But because it’s all-inclusive and you pretty much never want to leave, the comparisons are natural, and the differences are huge. We went for two nights, and if we could have started working there and never left, we would have. It’s a place that’s worth saving up for—even if you only go for a couple of days. We met one family that goes for three days every couple of years because it’s what they can afford—but since they don’t have to fly there, it actually evens out.

When we stayed at the Marston House in Wiscasset, one day we took a little trip to the Avena Botanicals Apothecary and Gardens, in Rockport. I had first learned about it from my friend Steve Orr, the garden editor at Martha Stewart Living, when he covered it for the magazine. It was founded in 1985 by herbalist and gardener Deb Soule, who is the sweetest woman (and has a book coming out this month!) You can drop in and check out the biodynamic herb gardens, from which they hand harvest the herbs that go into the balms, tinctures, and other things they make.We are big fans of everything they do: Heal-All salve that comes in a tin is always with us—it works on humans and pets, and is an all-purpose salve that is great for any skin irritation. They have a number of tinctures that are alcohol-free that work really well for conditions like upper respiratory, digestive issues, fever. . .

Clara and Deb Soule. We had such a blast hanging out there—I think we stayed several hours.

Summer has finally arrived, and we have vacation on the brain. Check back here every day for Yolanda’s guide to the must-see local spots across the state, and head over to her blog for even more photos.

One of the many reasons I love the blogosphere is when it introduces me to really magical places and really lovely people. Several years ago, someone had recommended Katy Elliott’s blog to me, and I remember seeing the Marston House on it. I think I later saw it on another favorite blog, Designtripper. When I saw it on Martha’s blog, I knew I just had to visit! I spoke to the owners at one point, but was unable to visit as they are only open from May to October. Well, last year I was able to visit it with Clara, right before the 4th of July. We spent two nights there (it’s in Wiscasset), and not only did we love the Marston House, but we fell in love with the owners, Sharon and Paul Mrozinski. They couldn’t be kinder, or more interesting, or have better taste. The rooms they let are so tastefully appointed, and the basket of breakfast is perfect.

Paul makes the best biscuits ever. Clara swears.

It’s just up the street from Red’s, the lobster-roll place that causes traffic jams and always has a line. There are plenty of great things to do in the area—so this is a good base. We returned later in August, as I wanted Matt to meet Sharon and Paul, and we found even more things we loved in the area. I promise to write about our November stay with Sharon and Paul in their apartment in France, which they rent out. Beautiful.

We had a nice lunch here at Solo Bistro after the Saturday farmers’ market in Bath.

Maine’s First Ship reconstruction project. . .

The Maine Maritime Museum, above . . . one of our favorite museums ever. It’s huge, with so much outdoor space to run around . . . and lots of hands-on stuff for little ones. Plus boats you can walk onto. . . . One ticket lasts for two days, because that’s what you’ll really need to see it all. (Not that we spent two days there—it’s just that big, so if you feel like doing that—you could!)

We loved this North Creek Farm. Delicious food, sweet owners, and sort of like the best general store you could imagine. It’s actually more than anything a nursery that specializes in roses.

Above images are from inside the Marston House . . . where they sell the antiques they collect all fall/winter long in Europe. The dresses above are amazing—I bought the red one, and I think three people in my office have bought them, too. They look good on everyone!

So we drove by Monkey C Monkey Do enough times (it’s on the main drag that brings you to Marston House) that I had to bring Clara there. We stayed an hour, and she had a blast. Worth doing as long as you can stomach watching.

Friends recommended we stop at the Fat Boy Drive-In in Brunswick. We couldn’t have timed it better. It’s across from a local airport, and there was a major air show happening. Perfect old-school burgers.
